Established in 1880 as Banca Nationala a Romaniei (National Bank of Romania). The Bank was nationalised on January 1, 1947. On November 13, 1948 name changed to State Bank of the People's Republic of Romania and on June 10, 1965 to Banca Nationala a Republicii Socialiste Romania (National Bank of the Socialist Republic of Romania). On July 1, 1968 the Bank's Foreign Department was taken over by the newly-established Romanian Bank for Foreign Trade. On December 1, 1990 name changed back to Banca Nationala a Romaniei.
